What to Bring and What to Do If You Don't Have It

Your documents are the single most important thing you will carry to NYSC Orientation Camp, more important than clothes, food or gadgets. Without them, you will be denied entry and registration.

This guide walks you through every document you need, what each one does, how many copies to carry, and what to do if something is missing.

Checklist at a glance

Every corps member needs the first seven items below. Make sure you have them before you leave home.

• NYSC Call-Up Letter: Colour print, 3 to 5 photocopies. Do not laminate.

• NYSC Green Card: Colour print, signed, 3 to 5 photocopies. Do not laminate.

• Statement of Result or Degree Certificate: Original, 4 to 5 photocopies. No result, no registration.

• Institutional ID Card: Original, 3 photocopies (front and back). Faculty or department IDs are rejected.

• Passport photographs: 4 to 8 prints on a white background. They must match your online photo.

• Medical Certificate of Fitness: Original, plus a spare copy. Government or military hospital only.

• NIN slip or National ID: Original, plus a spare copy. Often needed to open your allowance account.

• Waterproof file jacket: One jacket to hold everything above.

Special categories (HND graduates, healthcare professionals, married women, foreign-trained graduates) have extra requirements, covered after the core documents.

Core documents every corps member needs

1. NYSC Call-Up Letter

This is your official posting document. Print it in colour from your NYSC dashboard. Do not laminate it, because camp officials will stamp and sign the original. Carry 3 to 5 photocopies.

2. NYSC Green Card

This is your online registration slip. It shows your personal details, your state choices and your unique call-up number. Print it in colour, sign it, and do not laminate it. Carry 3 to 5 photocopies.

3. Statement of Result or Degree Certificate

Bring the original issued by your institution. If you have not collected your certificate, a valid Statement of Result is mandatory. Showing up with neither means you can be decamped immediately. Carry 4 to 5 photocopies.

4. Institutional Identity Card

Bring the original student ID issued by your university or polytechnic, and photocopy both the front and the back. Faculty or departmental IDs are rejected. Carry 3 photocopies.

5. Passport photographs

Bring 4 to 8 recent passport photographs on a white background. They must match the face captured during your online biometric registration, so do not change your look drastically between registration and camp.

6. Medical Certificate of Fitness

This proves you are fit for the paramilitary drills. It must come from a government or military hospital, such as a Federal Medical Centre, a General Hospital or a University Teaching Hospital. Certificates from private clinics are now rejected, so do not waste money on one.

7. NIN slip or National ID

Keep your National Identification Number slip within reach. Bank agents on camp often ask for it when opening your allowance account.

If a core document is missing

Do not wait until camp day. If your Statement of Result or certificate is not with you, contact your institution's registry early and ask for a Statement of Result. If your Green Card or Call-Up Letter will not print, log in to your NYSC dashboard and reprint it well before you travel. For any other gap, ask at your state NYSC secretariat or your nearest NYSC office before camp opens.

Extra documents for special categories

If you fall into any group below, bring these on top of the core documents.

Polytechnic graduates (HND)

Present both your National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) statements of result. NYSC also requires a properly structured, officially stamped Industrial Training (IT) letter covering at least one full calendar year. Get the stamp from your school before you travel, not after.

Medical and healthcare professionals

Doctors, pharmacists, nurses and optometrists must present their current professional license or registration certificate from their council, together with evidence of completed housemanship or internship.

If you have no proof of professional registration, you will be registered as a regular non-medical graduate. You will not be allowed to practice on camp or work in the camp clinic, and you cannot practice during your primary assignment.

Married women seeking posting to a husband's state

To be posted or redeployed to your husband's state of residence, bring three things: your Marriage Certificate, the newspaper publication of your change of name, and your husband's proof of residence, such as a utility bill or an employer letter.

Foreign-trained graduates

Bring the original copies of every academic credential you uploaded online, your International Passport showing Nigerian Immigration Service entry stamps, and your Residence Permit or visa. This lets the NYSC Foreign Evaluation Division confirm that your degree is genuine and that you were physically in that country for the length of your study.

If your certificates are not in English, you must present an official, certified English translation from an embassy or a recognized professional translation body. Without it, your verification is suspended.

If you lost your International Passport, provide an Emergency Travel Certificate (ETC) issued by the Nigerian embassy, or an official police report together with an affidavit describing the loss. If you have no proof of entry and exit stamps at all, your registration is put on hold until immigration authorities complete verification.

Pro-tips for a stress-free registration

1. Use the clear file strategy. Put every original and its photocopies in a waterproof plastic zip-file jacket. Keep it in your hand pouch or backpack, never deep inside your main travel box.

2. Multiply your copies. Make at least 4 photocopies of each document before you travel. Photocopying inside camp costs about twice as much and means long queues.

3. Cross-check your names. The spelling and order of your names must match across your Statement of Result, Call-Up Letter and institutional dashboard. Fix any mismatch before camp.

4. Sort by office. Arrange your file in the order you will be asked for documents, with the Call-Up Letter and Green Card on top, so you never dig through a pile at the counter.

5. Keep digital backups. Scan or photograph every document and store the copies on your phone and email as a fallback, although officials will still want the paper originals.
