If you're preparing for NYSC, there's a new document standing between you and orientation camp, and it's catching a lot of people off guard.

It's called NERD. And NYSC has been very clear about it: no NERD clearance, no NYSC.

That's not a slogan someone made up on WhatsApp. NYSC posted it on its official X account while preparing the 2026 Batch B mobilization, urging prospective corps members to get their clearance early to avoid delays. The Director-General, Brig.-Gen. Olakunle Nafiu, also announced at a pre-mobilization workshop in May 2026 that prospective corps members would have to present NERD compliance certificates before mobilization.

So if you've been waiting to see whether this one is "serious," it is. Here's everything you need to know.

What is NERD?

NERD stands for the Nigeria Education Repository and Databank. (You'll see other names floating around online, like "National Electronic Registration Database." The official name is Nigeria Education Repository and Databank, and the official website is ned.gov.ng.)

It's a national digital database set up by the Federal Government to collect, preserve and verify academic records and academic work from Nigerian institutions. Think of it as one central place where your project, thesis or dissertation, and your academic credentials, are stored and verified.

The government's reasons are straightforward:

  • Fighting certificate forgery. If your academic work and credentials are logged in a national database, it becomes much harder for anyone to fake a degree.

  • Raising the quality of academic work. When projects are stored permanently and linked to supervisors and institutions, there's more accountability for what gets approved.

  • Preserving Nigerian research. Thousands of final-year projects and theses that used to gather dust in departmental libraries are now being digitized and stored.

What is the NERD clearance slip?

The NERD clearance slip is your proof that your academic work has been submitted to and logged in the NERD database. It's what you show to be cleared for NYSC mobilization.

The Federal Government's directive is that no graduate, whether trained in Nigeria or abroad, will be mobilized for NYSC or given an exemption letter without proof of NERD compliance. Universities across the country, from UNN to FUTMINNA to Bayero University, have since told their graduates the same thing: no clearance slip, no registration at camp.

And it's not just for NYSC. The clearance also serves as proof of verified academic records, which can come up later for employment and other official verifications. So this isn't a document you get once and forget.

Who needs it?

If you're a prospective corps member who hasn't yet been mobilized, assume you need it. That includes:

  • Graduates of Nigerian universities, polytechnics and colleges of education

  • Graduates of private, public, military and specialized institutions

  • Foreign-trained Nigerian graduates

  • Graduates who finished years ago but haven't served yet

The policy doesn't affect people who are already serving or were mobilized before enforcement began.

What documents do you need?

Get these ready before you start. Most delays happen because one of them is missing or wrong.

  1. A soft copy of your complete project, thesis or dissertation. The actual Word (DOCX) or PDF file. Not a scanned hard copy, not photos of pages.

  2. A clear, recent passport photograph.

  3. Your NIN (National Identification Number), either your NIN slip or a photo of your ID card.

  4. Your degree certificate or statement of result.

  5. A picture of your project's certification or approval page, the page signed by your supervisor and HOD.

  6. A functional email address that you actually check. Your updates and clearance slip will come through here.

Don't have the soft copy of your project? This is the most common problem. Go back to whoever typed it, whether that's you, a classmate or the business Centre near your school, and ask for the original Word file. If it's truly lost, talk to your department about the approved copy they hold.

How to get your NERD clearance slip

This is the part that has changed, so read carefully.

NERD registration is no longer something you do yourself at a cyber café or on your own. NERD now processes registrations through accredited NERD Digital Service Centers (DSCs) and verified agents. NERD has set up over 1,200 of these centers across the country and has warned students to deal only with accredited ones, whose details are published on NERD's official lookup portal.

The good news is that an accredited center can process your registration wherever you are in the country. You don't need to travel, and you don't need to leave your house.

The bad news is that fake agents have noticed too. So who you use matters.

Get it done with Corperland

Corperland NERD Registration partners with accredited NERD Digital Service Centers to process your registration properly, the first time.

Here's how it works:

  1. Fill in your details online. Personal info, academic info and your documents. It takes about ten minutes, from your phone or laptop.

  2. Pay one flat fee. ₦15,000 if you studied in Nigeria. ₦30,000 if you studied abroad. No hidden charges.

  3. We review your documents before anything is submitted, so problems are caught and fixed before they reach NERD.

  4. We submit everything through our accredited Digital Service Centre partner.

  5. You track your application with a reference number at every stage.

  6. Your clearance slip lands in your email, usually within 24 to 48 hours if your documents are complete and correct.

No office visit. No queues. No "we'll get back to you" on WhatsApp. And if something goes wrong, we guide you through the fix.

Corperland Ltd is a registered Nigerian company (RC 7723671).

How to spot a fake NERD agent

Whoever you use, protect yourself:

  • Check accreditation. NERD publishes the verified contact details (phone number, email and location) of accredited centers on its official lookup portal. If a center isn't listed, NERD's advice is simple: don't use them.

  • Avoid random cyber cafés. NERD has specifically advised students not to go to just any cyber café or center for NERD processes.

  • Be wary of anyone who can't tell you who they're submitting through, can't give you a reference number, or asks you to pay into a personal account with no paper trail.

  • Never hand over your documents to someone you can't trace. Your NIN and academic records are sensitive. Use a registered business you can hold accountable.

Studied abroad? Here's what's different

Foreign-trained graduates need NERD clearance too. The good news is that the process with us is almost the same.

The only extra information we need from you is your country of study. Everything else, the project, passport photograph, NIN, certificate and approval page, is the same as for graduates who studied in Nigeria. The fee is ₦30,000, which reflects the extra handling involved for foreign qualifications.

One important note: NERD clearance is separate from the evaluation of your foreign certificate. The Federal Government has also directed that foreign certificates must be cleared through the evaluation desk at the Federal Ministry of Education before mobilization. Make sure you've handled both.

What if your record is missing or wrong on NERD?

This is where a lot of people panic. Don't. Most issues fall into a few categories.

Your name, department or institution is wrong or missing. Contact NERD support at [email protected] straight away, and inform your school's NERD compliance unit or NYSC desk officer. Don't upload your project under wrong details and hope it sorts itself out.

Your credentials (certificate or result) aren't showing. Under the NERD system, your institution is responsible for uploading academic credentials like transcripts and certificates, while you upload your project. If your credentials are missing, the issue is usually on the school's side. Go to your school's NERD desk, Student Affairs or Exams and Records office and ask them to confirm your record has been uploaded.

Your name isn't on your school's approved list. This is a separate problem from NERD, but it often shows up at the same time. Your school's Senate or Academic Board list is what gets uploaded to NYSC. If you're not on it, or there's an error in your name, date of graduation or JAMB number, contact your school's NYSC desk officer immediately. Errors here can block your NYSC registration even if your NERD clearance is fine.

Your project was rejected. It's usually something fixable: wrong file format, missing certification page, a blurry approval page, or incomplete sections. Correct it and resubmit. (If you register with Corperland, we review everything first so this rarely happens, and if NERD flags something, we tell you exactly what to change.)

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Waiting until your call-up letter is out. By then, everyone is rushing and centers are overwhelmed.

  • Using an unverified agent. There are already stories of fake registration centers. Use an accredited center or a registered company that works with one, and check before you pay.

  • Submitting a scanned hard copy instead of the original file.

  • Using an email you don't check. Your clearance slip and updates go there.

  • Mismatched details. Your name on NERD should match your NIN, your certificate and your school's records exactly.

Don't leave it till the last minute

Every batch, the same thing happens: call-up letters come out, everyone rushes to do NERD at once, the portal slows down, and people miss their camp dates over a document they could have sorted weeks earlier.

Don't be that person.
